ESL Classes For Admission To Canadian Universities

 

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) COURSES BY WISS

At Waterloo Independent Secondary School (WISS), we are committed to providing international students with the skills needed to excel at any Canadian university they hope to attend. We offer ESL courses levels 1-5 to build on existing education and grow and expand English speaking, reading, comprehension and listening skills. ESLAO ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE -LEVEL 1

ESLAO Level 1- This is an introductory course. It builds on existing knowledge and allows students to use beginner English language skills as they develop their reading, speaking, and listening skills. Students will have the opportunity to engage in short conversations, write short sentences, and more.

  • PREREQUISITE: None

    GRADE: Open

  • WISS Online

  • ESLAO online builds on students’ previous education and language knowledge to introduce them to the English language and help them adjust to the diversity in their new environment. Students will use beginning English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for everyday and essential academic purposes.

    They will engage in short conversations using basic English language structures and simple sentence patterns; read short adapted texts, and write phrases and short sentences. ESLAO online also provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to begin to adapt to their new lives in Canada.

ESLBO ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE –LEVEL 2

ESLBO Level 2- This begins expanding on the English language skills that have been learned and prepares students for both everyday and academic environments. Students will begin learning more complex grammatical structures. As with all of our ESL courses, ESLBO also supports students’ adaptation to the Ontario school system.

  • Prerequisites: ESL Level 1 or equivalent
    Grade: Open

  • WISS Online

  • ESLBO online extends students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English for everyday and academic purposes. Students will participate in conversations in structured situations on a variety of familiar and new topics; read a variety of texts designed or adapted for English language learners; expand their knowledge of English grammatical structures and sentence patterns, and link English sentences to compose paragraphs.

    ESLBO online also supports students’ continuing adaptation to the Ontario school system by expanding their knowledge of diversity in their new province and country.

ESLCO ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE –LEVEL 3

ESLCO Level 3- This allows students to even further their English language skills that will allow them to excel in both academic and everyday settings. In this course, students will have the opportunity to perform oral presentations, expand their vocabulary, read a wide range of texts, and more. Students will also learn more about the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship.

  • Prerequisites: ESL Level 2 or equivalent
    Grade: Open

  • WISS Online

  • ESLCO online further extends students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English for a variety of everyday and academic purposes. Students will make short classroom oral presentations; read a variety of adapted and original texts in English; and write using a variety of text forms.

    As well, students will expand their academic vocabulary and their study skills to facilitate their transition to the mainstream school program. ESLCO online also introduces students to the rights and responsibilities inherent in Canadian citizenship, and to a variety of current Canadian issues.

ESLDO ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE –LEVEL 4

ESLDO Level 4- This provides opportunities for students to use English with increasing fluency and accuracy in both academic and everyday environments. ESLDO helps students learn more about being an informed citizen and strongly expands on oral presentation, reading, and writing skills needed to excel in Canadian school settings.

  • Prerequisites: ESL Level 3 or equivalent
    Grades: Open

  • WISS Online

  • ESLDO online prepares students to use English with increasing fluency and accuracy in classroom and social situations and to participate in Canadian society as informed citizens. Students will develop the oral presentation, reading, and writing skills required for success in all school subjects.

    In ESLDO online, students will extend listening and speaking skills through participation in discussions and seminars; study and interpret a variety of grade-level texts; write narratives, articles, and summaries in English; and respond critically to a variety of print and media texts.

ESLEO ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE – LEVEL 5

ESLEO Level 5- This is our final ESL course which ensures that students have the skills and strategies needed to excel in Canadian universities. In this course, students have the opportunity to participate in classroom debates, lead workshops, write essays, and more. Our Level 5 course ensures that students feel confident as they prepare for their Canadian university experience.

  • Prerequisites: ESL Level 4 or equivalent
    Grade: Open

  • WISS Online

  • ESLEO online provides students with the skills and strategies they need to make the transition to college and university preparation courses in English and other secondary school disciplines. Students will be encouraged to develop independence in a range of academic tasks.

    They will participate in debates and lead classroom workshops; read and interpret literary works and academic texts; write essays, narratives, and reports; and apply a range of learning strategies and research skills effectively. In ESLEO online, students will further develop their ability to respond critically to print and media texts.
